(John Orley) Allen Tate
Tate, (John Orley) Allen (1899–1979), U.S. writer, critic, and teacher. He edited the literary magazine Fugitive (1922–25) and later Sewanee Review (1944–46) and advocated the “New Criticism,” with its stress on a work's intrinsic qualities. His own work includes several collections of poetry and essays, biographies, and a novel.
