Taxco
Taxco (pop. 27,100), town in Mexico, 70, mi (113 km) southwest of Mexico City. A replica of an early Spanish town, it attracts many tourists and people in the arts. Founded (1529) by Hernando Cortés, it has been an important silvermining town since pre-Columbian times; it is still the center of Mexico's silver industry. Other minerals, such as copper, lead, and zinc are also mined there. Taxco also serves as a commercial center for the region, which is largely agricultural.
