Tel Aviv-Jaffa

Tel Aviv-Jaffa (pop. 353,200), second-largest city in Israel, on the Mediterranean coast northwest of Jerusalem. It is a modern city-port and Israel's chief manufacturing center, as well as a tourist resort. Tel Aviv was Israel's first capital (1948–49). Jaffa (Hebrew: Yafo), an ancient port, was incorporated with Tel Aviv in 1950; the city officially became Tel Aviv-Yafo, but it is generally referred to as Tel Aviv. Tel Aviv has two museums and several educational institutions, including Tel Aviv University and Bar llan University.
