Telstar

Telstar, U.S. artificial satellite, launched July 10, 1962. The first to relay television signals across the Atlantic Ocean. Telstar weighed 170 lb (77 kg). Broadcasts ended (Feb. 1963) after Van Allen belt radiation damaged some of the 1,000 transistors.
