Terence

Terence (195?–159? B.C.), playwright of Roman comedies, written in Latin. His 6 plays, based on earlier Greek comedies, still exist: The Woman of Andros, The Self-Tormentor, The Eunuch, Phormio, The Mother-in-Law, and The Brothers. These plays display his wit and his realistic understanding of human nature. He was brought from his native Carthage as a slave to Rome, and a Roman senator secured his education.
