Teresa, or Theresa, Saint (1515–82), also known as Theresa of Ávila, Spanish nun and Doctor of the Church. She worked toward reforming the Carmelite order, which she believed was lacking in self-denial and austerity, and in 1562, with approval from the pope, established her own convent. She was a leading figure in the Catholic Reformation. Her writings rank among the greatest in mystical literature. St. Teresa was considered a miracle worker and was canonized in 1622. Her feast day is Oct. 15.
