Thebes
Thebes, southern city in ancient Egypt, located on the Nile River; present-day city of Luxor. Temples to the god Amon-Re as well as elaborate pyramids constructed for the burial of kings from the Eighteenth Dynasty (1554–1304 B.C.) are found here. The temples of Karnak and Luxor still stand. Thebes served as the capital for many of these rulers, including Tutankhamen, whose remains were unearthed in the 20th century (1922). Remnants of tombs are still apparent in the nearby Valley of the Kings. Thebes was destroyed by the Assyrians (661 B.C.) and the Romans (29 B.C.).
