Virgil Thomson
Thomson, Virgil (1896–1989), U.S. composer and music critic. Influenced by The Six in Paris, he became a leading “Americanist.” His works include the operas Four Saints in Three Acts (1928) and the Mother of Us All (1947), in collaboration with Gertrude Stein, symphonies, and instrumental, chamber, and film music. He won a 1949 Pulitzer Prize for his Louisiana Story score.
