Tiglath-pileser, rulers of ancient Assyria. Tiglath-pileser I ruled from 1115–1077 B.C. A great military leader, he conquered territories from the Mediterranean coast to what are now Turkey and Iran. Historians know little about Tiglath-pileser II, who ruled from 967–935 B.C. during a seemingly stable reign. Tiglath-pileser III, who ruled from 744–727 B.C., founded the Assyrian Empire. He led a massive military and diplomatic campaign that extended into parts of what are now Iraq, Syria, and Turkey. In 728 B.C., he united the kingdoms of Assyria and Babylonia and declared himself king of Babylonia.
