Paul Johannes Tillich
Tillich, Paul Johannes (1886–1965), German-born theologian and teacher. He attempted to synthesize Christianity and classical and modern existentialist philosophy in works like Systematic Theology (1951–63), The Shaking of Foundations (1948), and The Courage to Be (1948). Dismissed from Frankfurt University because of opposition to the Nazis, he taught at the Union Theological Seminary, New York (1933–59) and at Harvard and Chicago universities (1954–62 and 1962–65, respectively).
