Tiranë, or Tirana (pop. 244,200), capital of Albania, located about 20 mi (32 km) east of the Adriatic Sea. It was founded in the early 17th century and became the capital city in 1920. After the proclamation of Communist rule in 1946, the city grew as an industrial center. It is the home of many of Albania's cultural and educational institutions as well as the center of the country's publishing and broadcast industries. Most residents are Muslim.
