Toluene

Toluene (C6H5CH3), liquid hydrocarbon related to benzene. Made from treated petroleum or distilled coal tar, it is commonly used in the production of a wide range of industrial chemicals, such as the preservative benzoic acid and the explosive trinitrotoluene (TNT). Because it is toxic, federal guidelines exist to regulate its use in the workplace.
