Toulon



Toulon (pop. 170,200), port city in southeastern France. It is the administrative seat of the district of Var and an important French naval base. Historic landmarks include medieval churches and a 16th-century fish market. Toulon is the site of a Roman colony founded in the 100s B.C. Chief economic activities include shipbuilding, fishing, wine making, and chemical and machine manufacturing.
