Town meeting

Town meeting, direct democratic form of local government, mainly inNew England (Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Vermont). In colonial days, all enfranchised citizens met to choose officials, decide taxes, and discuss affairs. In the 1800s meetings became an annual event called by warrant. Today, many town meetings are attended only by officials and elected representatives, but others are fully attended by the public when significant local issues are discussed.
