Trephining
Trephining, surgical removal of a small, circular piece of skull. An ancient, even prehistoric, practice, it was probably first performed to release evil spirits from a person's head. Today it is used primarily to open the way for certain brain surgeries and to relieve pressure caused by bleeding between the brain and the skull. The operation is performed with a small saw called a trephine.
