Trieste



Trieste (pop. 228,400), city-seaport in northeastern Italy at the head of the Adriatic Sea, with steel, oil, and shipbuilding industries. A busy port in Roman times, it was part of Austria (1382–1919) and then of Italy. Claimed by Yugoslavia in 1945, it was made a Free Territory (1947–54), then restored to Italy.
