Uniformitarianism

Uniformitarianism, doctrine in geology originally opposed to Catastrophism. Originated (1785) by James Hutton and championed by Charles Lyell in the 19th century, it holds that the same geologic processes are at work today as have always existed thoughout geologic time. Uniformitarianism emphasizes the relative slowness and gradual nature of geological change.
