United States Merchant Marine Academy

United States Merchant Marine Academy , government-sponsored educational institution (since 1943), located in Kings Point, N.Y. The academy prepares young men and women to become officers in the U.S. Merchant Marine. To be considered for admission into the school, a candidate must be nominated by a U.S. senator or representative and pass a competitive examination. The school program involves a 4-year undergraduate education, with some technical and naval training, as well as training on board a ship.
