Vacuum tube
Vacuum tube, glass or metal envelope that controls electronic currents that are necessary to operate electronic equipment like radios, televisions, and computers. It gets its name from the fact that almost all air is removed from the tube for it to work. Between 1920 and 1950, all electrical equipment used vacuum tubes. They have now been replaced by a newer device, the transistor, which is smaller and more reliable and consumes less power.
