Valentinian I



Valentinian I (A.D. 321–375), Roman emperor who ruled 364–375 in conjunction with his younger brother Valens. Valentinian succeeded the Emperor Jovian and appointed his brother to rule the eastern part of the empire while he ruled the west. During his reign, he subdued the Germanic tribes threatening the western provinces and built fortifications along the Rhine.
