James Alfred Van Allen



Van Allen, James Alfred (1914– ), U.S. physicist and inventor who discovered two zones of radiation surrounding the earth (1958). This led to new knowledge of the effects of cosmic radiation on the earth. Van Allen developed the research rocket Aerobee. He was also instrumental in organizing the International Geophysical Year (1957–58), a program promoting worldwide cooperation in research.
