Rogier Van der Weyden

Van der Weyden, Rogier (1399?–1464), Flemish painter of religious subjects. He was probably influenced by Robert Campin and Jan van Eyck. He masterfully captured intangible emotion, while also distancing the viewer, in such works as The Descent from the Cross (c.1435).
