Battle of Verdun
Verdun, Battle of (Feb.-Dec. 1916), major World War I engagement. The Germans launched a concentrated offensive against the fortified line of Verdun. The French logistically could not abandon this position, and the Germans hoped to exhaust France's forces during the battle. Total casualties were well over 700,000. No significant advantage was gained by either side.
