Jan Vermeer
Vermeer, Jan (1632–75), Dutch painter who spent his entire life in Delft. His interior scenes are noted for superb control of light, precise tonality, cool harmonious coloring, and classical composition. Of the fewer than 40 works attributed to him, his masterpieces include The Letter and Head of a Girl (both 1665).
