Giovanni da Verrazano

Verrazano, Giovanni da (1485?–1528?), Italian navigator and explorer in the service of France. Verrazano explored the Atlantic coast of North America from Newfoundland to the Carolinas (1524). He is believed to have been the first European to explore the Hudson River and Manhattan Island regions.
