Versailles



Versailles (pop. 95,200), French city, residential suburb 12 mi (19 km) southwest of Paris, capital of Yveline department. It is world-famous for its magnificent Palace of Versailles, built for King Louis XIV in the mid-1600s. The seat of the French court for over 100 years, it was made a national museum in 1837, and the palace and its formal gardens are among France's greatest tourist attractions.
