Veterans Affairs, Department of (VA), formerly the Veterans Administration, U.S. government executive department consolidated (1989) to administer the various health, rehabilitation, education, loan, compensation, and insurance programs provided to veterans of the military services. The VA operates hospitals throughout the country, provides educational assistance and training programs under various GI Bills, lends money for home purchases, and administers 113 national cemeteries.
