Viola
Viola, stringed musical instrument, the tenor voice of the violin family. It is 14.5–17 in (37–43 cm) long, has 4 strings, and is played with a bow. The viola originated in the 1500s. The composers Hector Berlioz, Richard Strauss, and Sir William Walton wrote for the viola as a solo instrument.
