Waco



Waco (pop. 189,123), industrial city in central Texas, situated on the Brazos River nearly 100 mi (161 km) south of Dallas. Besides being a major market for cotton and other agricultural products, Waco is home to factories producing clothing, glass products, textiles, and machinery. Waco was the residence of the Branch Davidians, a religious cult that made headlines in 1993, when, after a 6-week standoff with the FBI, its compound was burned and at least 75 cultists died.
