Wake Island

Wake Island, atoll in the central Pacific Ocean, an unincorporated territory administered by the U.S. Air Force. An important commercial and military airbase, it consists of 3 islets (Wake, Wilkes, and Peale), totalling 3 sq mi (7.8 sq km) situated around a shallow lagoon. It was occupied by Japan from 1941 to 1945.
