Walking
Walking, or race-walking, competitive track-and-field sport. This form of racing utilizes a precise heel-and-toe gait: The leading foot touches the ground heel first advancing the walker quickly forward onto the toe, which provides a pushing momentum to each stride. The leg is locked in a straight position momentarily while the foot is still touching the ground. An expert race-walker can walk 1 mi (1.6 km) in about 6.5 minutes while an ordinary walker would take about 15–20 minutes to cover the same distance. Walking competitions, particularly in the Olympic Games, are held at distances of about 12–31 mi (20–50 km).
