Walking stick

Walking stick, or stick insect, insect (Diapheromera femorata) that resembles a twig, camouflaging it from its enemies. There are several species of these insects of the family Phasmidae; the common walking stick has long, slender legs and a body of about 2–3 in (5–8 cm). They are usually a green or brownish color, may have sharp spines, and release a noxious scent. Walking sticks harm trees by eating the leaves; however, few survive the larval stage because the female lays her eggs where she stands and most fall to the ground.
