Sir Robert Walpole

Walpole, Sir Robert (1676–1745), English politician often described as Great Britain's first prime minister. A Whig, he held ministerial posts from 1708 to 1717. He was rewarded for his role in salvaging the government from the South Sea Bubble (a speculation scandal) with an appointment as first lord of the treasury and chancellor of the exchequer (1721), during which time he dominated Parliament and created political and financial stability. Facing opposition and unpopularity as Britain became involved in European wars from 1739, he resigned in 1742, becoming first earl of Orford.
