Walter Reed Army Medical Center, military hospital and care facility in Washington, D.C. The center, named for U.S. Army pathologist Walter Reed, researcher of typhoid and yellow fevers, provides medical care for military personnel and their families; conducts medical and scientific research; and provides advanced education for medical personnel. The center covers a combined area of 253 acres (103 hectares) in Washington, and Forest Glen and Glenhaven, Md. Facilities include the Walter Reed Army Inst. of Research, the Armed Forces Inst. of Pathology, and the Inst. of Dental Research.
