Wampanoag



Wampanoag, Native Americans of the Algonquian language family who lived east of Narragansett Bay, R.I. Their chief, Massasoit (c.1580–1661), made friends with the Pilgrims (1620). His second son, known as King Philip, was the leader during King Philip's War (1675), his attempt to rid his land of foreign settlers. After their defeat the Wampanoag were nearly exterminated.
