War correspondent
War correspondent, news reporter who sends information from a war front to print or broadcast media, to provide accurate, up-to-date coverage. The Mexican War (1846–48) was probably the first war to be reported on systematically by getting information immediately from the front. U.S. writers who have been important war correspondents include Walt Whitman (Civil War, 1861–65) and Stephen Crane (Spanish-American War, 1898).
