Mercy Otis Warren



Warren, Mercy Otis (1728–1814), U.S. author of patriotic works. Warren, who knew several Revolutionary War leaders, wrote to express her own political beliefs. She encouraged pro-Revolutionary sympathy with her satirical, anti-Tory plays: The Adulateur (1773), The Defeat, and The Group (1775). Her major work was a history of the American Revolution titled History of the Rise, Progress, and Termination of the American Revolution (3 vols., 1805). Warren advocated equal rights for women and the conservation of rights of individuals.
