Water polo

Water polo, game played in a swimming pool in which 2 teams try to pass or throw a ball into the opponent's goal. The game began in England in the 1870s. Each team consists of 7 players—6 in the field and 1 goalkeeper. Fieldplayers may use head, feet, or 1 hand to manage the ball; goalkeepers may use both hands while in the goal area. The team with the ball is allowed 35 seconds to get the ball across the opponent's goal and score. If the team is unsuccessful, the ball goes to the other team. Water polo is played in an area 66–98 ft (20–30 m) long and 26–66 ft (8–20 m) wide. A men's game lasts 28 minutes, and is divided into 7-minute quarters. A women's game lasts 24 minutes and is divided into 6-minute quarters.
