Wedge

Wedge, device with 2 or more surfaces that slope and taper to a thin edge. A wedge may be made of wood, metal, or other material and is used to split something apart. The wedge's thin edge is forced into a narrow opening of the object. The top of the wedge is hammered, driving the wedge further down, thereby piercing the object. A wedge may also be used to move a heavy object.
