Weimar



Weimar (pop. 63,400), city in east-central Germany, on the Ilm River. Weimar is a center for manufacturing agricultural machinery, electrical equipment, and chemicals. It was capital of the Saxe-Weimar duchy from 1547, and its court became the German cultural and intellectual center in the 18th and 19th centuries. Weimar was the site of the national assembly that established the so-called Weimar Republic in 1919. Buchenwald concentration camp was located nearby (1937–45).
