Peter Weiss



Weiss, Peter (1916–82), German-Swedish playwright, artist, and filmmaker. He fled Nazi Germany in 1934. With his innovative play The Persecution and Assassination of Jean Paul Marat as Performed by the Inmates of the Asylum of Charenton Under the Direction of the Marquis de Sade, or Marat/Sade (1964), Weiss was acclaimed the successor of Bertolt Brecht. His other dramas include The Investigation (1965), and Trotsky in Exile (1970).
