H. G. Wells
Wells, H. G. (1866–1946), British writer and social reformer. A draper's apprentice, he studied science and became a teacher. After such early science fiction as The Time Machine (1895) and The War of the Worlds (1898), he wrote novels on the lower middle class, including Kipps (1905) and The History of Mr. Polly (1910). A founder of the Fabian society, he became a social prophet (A Modern Utopia; 1905). After World War I he popularized knowledge in Outline of History (1920) and The Science of Life (1931).
