Welty, Eudora (1909– ), U.S. novelist and short-story writer, known for sensitive tales of Mississippi life. She superbly depicted atmosphere and characters in The Wide Net (1943), The Ponder Heart (1954), The Optimist's Daughter (1972; Pulitzer Prize), and others.
