Paul Whiteman



Whiteman, Paul (1891–1967), U.S. orchestra leader known as the “King of Jazz.” He introduced a personal style called “symphonic jazz.” Whiteman encouraged George Gershwin to compose Rhapsody in Blue (1924). Born in Denver, Colo., he spent his later years as a popular musical conductor on radio shows.
