Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney



Whitney, Gertrude Vanderbilt (1875–1942), U.S. sculptor. She is best known for her monuments commemorating the victims of World War I and for her fountain sculptures. The Whitney Studio Club, which she established in New York City (1918), was a center for U.S. avant-garde art and led to the founding of the Whitney Museum of American Art (1931).
