William and College of Mary
William and Mary, College of, coeducational, state university in Williamsburg, Va. Founded in 1693, it is the second-oldest university in the United States. William and Mary was the first college to offer law training and have separate schools of modern language and modern history. The honorary scholastic society Phi Beta Kappa was founded at the university (1776). Famous graduates include Thomas Jefferson and James Monroe.
