Wendell Lewis Willkie
Willkie, Wendell Lewis (1892–1944), U.S. political leader. A lawyer, he became president of a giant utility company and led business opposition to the New Deal. A Democrat until the mid-1930s, he was the Republican presidential candidate in 1940, gaining a large popular vote but losing to Franklin D. Roosevelt. His book One World (1943) was a plea for international cooperation.
