Writ of assistance

Writ of assistance, general search warrant issued to customs officers by American colonial courts from 1751. Their use to enforce import duties was imposed by the 1767 Townshend Acts and caused a major furor among the colonists. By 1772 many colonial courts were refusing to issue them. These writs were mentioned by the Declaration of Independence as one of the grievances of the colonies against England.
