Yankee

Yankee, slang term of uncertain origin, probably Dutch. Outside the United States, it refers to anyone from the United States; inside the country, it normally refers to a New Englander, especially someone descended from colonists. In the South it refers to Northerners, a tradition dating from the Civil War.
