Alaric, name of 2 Visigothic kings. Alaric I (c. A.D. 370–410) was commander of the Visigothic auxiliaries under the Roman Emperor Theodosius, upon whose death Alaric was proclaimed king of the Visigoths. After invading Greece and northern Italy, he captured and sacked Rome in 410. Alaric II (d. 507), ruled Spain and South Gaul from 484 and in 506 issued the Breviary of Alaric, a Visigothic code of Roman law, for his Roman subjects.
